Peaks Island is a 740 acre island located 3 miles from Portland, Maine by a very beautiful ferry ride. The island is jam packed with history, scenic beauty, and a very laid back living style that could only exist in a Maine environment. The overall theme will be a description of the island when it was one of the biggest attractions in New England and was called the Coney Island of Maine. For details see: The 5th Maine's Website You'll hear about the two battle weary civil war infantry regiments, the 5th and 8th Maine, who built hotel size 'summer cottages' on the island to celebrate their longevity!
As a contrast to the Coney Island theme a description of the island's current facilities is provided with a special emphasis on the work of two modern day architects (the two Ws), the island's master gardeners, and the rock wall and tower building wizards!
Civil war buffs will be fascinated by a visit to the island's 1888 5th Maine Infantry Regiment's Museum. This four story Queen Ann styled building providing one of the best views on the island tells how this badly bruised, battle weary regiment found the island.
The old and new themes will be buoyed by island enecdotes – these are hard to believe, but true tales about island life and characters.
The final component, and perhaps the best will be the scenic delights of the island particularly the backshore. This area is breath taking it also contains a massive complex of WWII fortification. These cement monoliths and the island's location made Casco Bay the most strategic port on the east coast during the 1940's.
